Keep in mind that, last Saturday, I bought a truck.

A couple of days ago, Shelley tweeted something about how her Jeep Liberty had been in the shop awaiting a backordered head for 65 days.

Aside: during this time, the Chrysler shop loaned us a 19-ninetysomething Dodge Intrepid, which is most assuredly one of the worst cars ever made. How bad is it? Upon learning that we had not, in fact, bought it, one of our neighbors told me “I am so happy to know that you did not choose that car on purpose.”  Even the sales folks at the dealership were amazed that we’d been driving it for as long as we had.

Let me just put it this way: in addition to smelling like smoke and sweat and ass, there is a spot on the driver’s-side door that’s gotten all smudged and dirty and greasy and discolored BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE YOU HIT YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU DRIVE THE CAR.

It turned out that someone on Jeep’s twitter feed was listening. That person and Shelley exchanged some information, and told her that the issue was being upgraded to “top care.” I’m assuming that that meant that someone at Chrysler customer service HQ called the GM of our dealer, because Friday at 4:00 we got a call from them. They had several options for us to consider, chief among them was that Chrysler was approving some nice buy-back terms.

They also wanted us to bring the Intrepid in to check the fluids. So they said.

When we arrived, we were informed that Chrysler had authorized them to pay the trade-in value on Shelley’s Jeep and an additional $2000 toward whatever other vehicle we wanted. We test drove three cars: two 2005 Grand Cherokees (one plain; one with leather, a sunroof, and a mysterious rattle in the dash) and very nice 2008 Patriot with extremely low mileage. It had apparently been someone’s second vehicle and had been stored in a garage for most of its life.

Leather interior. Heated seats. Sunroof. Clean.

Shelley wanted it. I wanted her to go for the Cherokee with the leather.

Oh well.

We managed to pick it up with a loan arrangement that didn’t change from our monthly payments on the (dead) Liberty, and so for roughly the same amount per month, we just picked up what is essentially a new car.

And so we have two new cars within a week–and the only payment we picked up is a modest one for a 2001 Ford truck.

  2. Hi. Can you tell me if Chrysler offered the buyback, the first time Top Care had a conversation with you? Or if not, how soon was it negotiated? Was the broken down car new, or had you owned it for a while? I noticed you said they offered trade-in value, but I’ve read where so many people are getting MSRP on their buybacks. My case was sent to Top Care today, and said I should get a call soon. However, if they offer trade in value, and not MSRP, we’d be screwed, as this is a 2012 minivan. My hubby purchased it for me, but I hadn’t seen or test drove the van. So when it got here, I noticed so many flaws and defects with it, and still finding things. Now the engine is running hot. I just wonder how easy or hard my case will be with Top Care. I hope for a great outcome, like yours. It’s great that Chrysler gave you a wonderful deal and made everything right. The vehicle is beautiful. Congrats!

  3. Linda: it was *very* quick. Everything for us happened between Tuesday and Friday. Considering you have a new vehicle (ours was a 2004), I’d expect them to make it as right as possble (i.e. MSRP, not trade-in). We’re pretty sold on Chrysler at this point; they’ve taken care of us at every turn—including a new windshield and fixing a leaky sunroof for free.

    It was all very, very easy.
