Recently, Oklahoma has taken on the smokers. It’s not surprising, considering the tobacco usage statistics in this state. The health department has given eating establishments a few choices. Establishments can ban smoking altogether, go “all smoking,” or they can provide a closed-off smoking section with its own ventilation.

Shelley just informed me that our local tavern has posted a sign saying that there’s no smoking between 2:00 and 4:00 pm. It has nothing to do with the new regulation. It seems that a longtime regular–a retired professor affectionately called “Doc”–has had to go on oxygen. He comes in every day from two to four, though, and the establishment has responded by politely informing customers that there is no smoking while Doc is in the bar. No ashtrays are set out while he is there, and you must go outside to smoke.

I think this is wonderful.
