We went to the OKC bombing memorial today. I haven’t been there since my mother and I visited the site of the bombing after the debris had been removed. The fence was there, though, and it was stunning to see what people moved by the experience of being there would leave behind. There are license plates. There are pictures. There are articles of clothing. It is absolutely stunning.

The memorial is actually something of a frame. There are two enormous archways on the east and west ends of a long reflecting pool (actually, it’s a long collection of granite slabs with a thin sheet of water over them), each with a time etched into the top of the arch. On the east is 9:01, and on the west is 9:03.

They look like this:

If you want a bigger version, save this image. It’s a direct link to a full-size image

The bombing happend, of course, at 9:02, a space occupied in the memorial by emptiness and reflection. I’ll post a link to more pictures tomorrow or Thursday when i have some time to put together a little site for them.
