I am back from the coffee shop, where I’ve been busily working on the corrections Greg suggested, all of which were very good. The essay is much stronger now, I think. I’m still tweaking some of the material at the end, but that’s not really that big of a deal, so it can wait.

I really hadn’t expected the dissertation to be this difficult to write. My MA thesis came out, except for one problematic chapter, smooth as silk. But this…this is like pulling teeth. I’m being productive—last semester I churned out nearly 100 pages—but it’s in fits and starts. Sure, my MA thesis was much more specific (one poet, a few poems, and her involvement in an organization), and so that made it easier than writing about the history of an idea that is hopelessly connected to everything from public health to the poor to the history of prisons to the notion of the self (which is really what I want to write about).

But I suppose that’s what over 50% of all Ph.D. students do not finish the dissertation.

Back to the revision process….
