Leaving On A Jet Plane

with one comment

Tuesday evening, we fly to London. This is the latest of several long research trips to London. The first set of them (3 trips in all and 8 weeks total) were spent in the British Library researching a little magazine called The Magdalen’s Friend and Female Homes’ Intelligencer. My primary interest in it at that point was in how it represented prostitutes, fallen women, and the rescue workers who attempted to help them—and more specifically, how their perceptions of these women were informed by literary treatments of prostitutes and fallen women. Over the course of the research, though, I became interested in it as an arm of the Rescue Society.

My most recent trip to London was to research the remaining records of both the Rescue Society and the Magdalen Hospital, two of three great institutions devoted to the reclamation of prostitutes and fallen women.

This trip? The third leg: the Church Penitentiary Association.

I keep thinking that all this time I have been looking for admissions records and case studies when what I need to be doing is sorting out who’s who on the boards of directors and then seeing how those people connect to other Victorians.
But anyway, for now I’m making lists and packing.

  1. You left out the part where you’ll be chillin’ in the home town of Freddie Engels!
